A little Girl was locked in a cold stone tower. She had a Stepmother as wicked as any story, who gave the Girl nothing but porridge to eat, and only rags to wear. The very birds of the air and animals in the fields often spoke about the Girl and her sad imprisonment. They resolved to help her.

One day, her Stepmother fell asleep in the garden. A very brave Rabbit ventured near, and saw the key to the tower hanging from a string ‘round her neck. The Rabbit at once snatched the key and hippity-hopped to unlock the lonely Girl from her prison. She was free! As the two escaped, the Stepmother woke, leaping to her feet to catch the hare and her errant stepdaughter.

The Rabbit hopped, bounded and scampered as fast as he could!
